A common question we receive is regarding which paper or canvas should be used for your giclee prints. Although we can give you some general guidelines, there is no set rule.
Generally, when reproducing art, it is best to stay with the substrate on which the original was created. Make inkjet canvas prints for canvas artwork and keep watercolor on watercolor paper.
For photography the world is wide open: many portrait photographers love the canvas and smooth photo rag looks. These are ideal for archival prints with good tonal range.
Keep in mind that if you have a lot of out of gamut colors canvas can be the most problematic substrate for inkjet printing. We do carry PremierArt canvas which has a wider range than many inkjet canvases on the market.
Smooth and textured watercolor papers need to be framed under glass. Canvas is water resistant and does not require protection beyond the coating we or a customer needs to apply.
An inkjet print made with a high quality giclee system exhibits great richness and range. We require a minimum 150 PPI (which translates into 1200 DPI at 8 bits) for canvas and watercolor papers. 200 PPI is preferred for coated photo papers.
If you have a file that does not have the minimum 150 PPI requirement, please upload it anyway. Chances are that we will still be able to print a good quality giclee. We will advise on viabilty.
