Giclee Paper Choices

One of the most frequently asked question is what papers should be used for inkjet giclee printing. The answer depends on a few subjective and objective factors.

Generally speaking, if reproducing art, stick with a substrate similar to the original. A watercolor art piece should be reproduced on a giclee watercolor paper. Oil on canvas should be made on an inkjet canvas.

Photographers on the other hand are not bound by these guidelines. We have produced inkjet prints from the same files on canvas and smooth or textured watercolor with outstanding results.

Black and white images in particular are a perfect match for the pure cotton papers and achieve

blacks often surpassing silver gelatin. We make giclee prints with 3 different black inks, creating a depth and tonality impossible with other fine art

reproduction systems.

With digital art we often see very bright colors and we used to steer customers away from canvas because the substrate had a limited gamut. This is not the case any longer. New inkjet canvas has fantastic gamut.

Papers for giclee printing are getting better. The market has expanded to a point that it has attracted many manufacturers and justified research and development.

If in doubt, we will be happy to make recommendations once we see the file.
